A Google search for the show also returns less than promising results.

The application boasts that "there will be approximately 100 (one hundred) for the artists (a book for each one), 200 (two hundred) exemplary ones will be distributed gratuitously in the main museums, universities, libraries and important embassies of different COUNTRIES FROM the WORLD and other institutions that ATcultura as for the best diffusion of the book considers".

For this, you will have to pay $350USD --- a staggering price, which may be better put to use for a vanity show.

I have provided a PDF of the application form for those who want to take a look at it.

This morning, CBC reported that some email accounts are being hacked and fake SOS emails are being sent out from them. Less than an hour later, I received the following email from one of my business contacts' email addresses:

Subject: I need your favor

Hello:

Hope you get this on time ? Sorry I didn't inform you about my trip in the United Kingdom for a program, I'm presently in Surrey and am having some difficulties here because I misplaced my wallet on my way to the hotel where my money and other valuable things were kept. presently my passport and my things are been held down by the hotel management pending when i make payment. I will like you to assist me with a loan of ($ 2,928) to sort-out my hotel bills and to get myself back home. I will appreciate whatever you can afford to assist me with, I'll refund the money back to you as soon as I return, let me know if you can be of any help? ASAP. I should have called you to explain better but as it is now things are really tight but I will make special effort to call you

Please I am hoping in you.

Best regards,
[name]
[title]

I sent out quite a few warnings to my personal contacts, and was astounded by some of the negative responses to my warning. Several people felt that you'd have to be really stupid to fall for that, or said that you should know if your friends/family were travelling, or that people should always call to make this kind of request.

What was obviously disconcerting to me was firstly that my attempt to help them was received with such disdain. This was, after all, a warning that originated from a reputable news source and not just a forwarded email with no inherit verification of the information (without using something like Snopes).

More puzzling was how these people presume to think that they would know whether everyone they know is travelling. Maybe it's just me, but I know a handful of people who travel often for business and/or pleasure, and I don't expect to know of all their travel plans. What's unfortunate about this scam is it preys on the goodwill of friendship between real people, leaving the victim little recourse to recover their money and the owner of the hacked account little recourse to repair the relationship.

Hi Linda, that piece is currently listed at $750. I can be flexible about it, as there would be shipping involved with it I presume, or maybe not if you on Kauai! I would prefer to speak with you personally about the price, rather than going back and forth for a few dollars. Where are you located? Have a great Christmas, and let me know what your decision is, Lynn

Today, I received an email for the "2009 international encyclopaedic dictionary of modern and contemporary art". The terms are similar to the email they sent last year, and although they assure artists that "course it will be visible to the whole world through the INTERNET" (emphasis theirs), the 2008 volume is absent from both Amazon.ca and Abebooks.

They continue to insist that "You will pay nothing for the drafting of your text and for printing. All you need to do is reserve one or two copies of this volume, depending on whether you decide tu publish a color or a black and white photo of your artwork." (emphasis added). This works out to 110 Euro for the inclusion of a b&w picture, or 220 for a colour one (approx $165USD or $330USD, respectively). However, this year they are throwing in "The prize "Premio ALBA 2009" (medal and diploma), free of charge". Because everyone knows free medals and diplomas from vanity presses are priceless.

They do claim that "Let us also point out that this volume will include the results of a large number of sales by some of the main auction houses". I wonder whether they can be sued for false advertising.

I have, however, been receiving an onslaught of email from organizations which offer real services, but where the costs vastly outweigh the benefits. Here's an example:

PicassoNet - another artist directory srevice. 8 images supported by advertising and a 20% commission, or 100 images for $50USD/yr and 10% commission. At that price, you could get your own website, sans commissions. You would, of course, not get the advertising they offer, but it's yet to be proven whether their advertising helps.

I couldn't find much on them, and even their own website doesn't provide much background info on them. It looks like they're been around since 2004, and that most of the artists who particpate are simply looking to bulk up their CV. The only other place online I could find with a discussion regarding their legitimacy is the Het Nederlands Kunstenaars Forum. After translating the conversation in chunks (the website forces itself out of frames, which are used by Google and Babelfish translators), it seemed that people were in agreement that they're a small-time website which just wasn't worth the entry fee.
