New scam twist that's damaging to artists

I have recently been alerted to a post on ArtForums.co.uk in which an artist is sharing an experience with "a ring of international art scammers who are taking on identities of artists and approaching art buyers. Hacked accounts for spam

Not a lot of major scams have been coming through my email lately (although I'm sure they're still happening). This morning, CBC reported that some email accounts are being hacked and fake SOS emails are being sent out from them. Less than an hour later, I received the following email from one of my business contacts' email addresses:

Subject: I need your favor

NEW SCAM – the pretender

A well known artist from Newfoundland had his gmail (google) account hacked into and used to send a series of fraudulent letters to the artist's friends and associates. The letters asked for a loan to help the artist's father with emergency medical expenses.
